Boss Battles in Animal Well

Animal Well doesn’t feature traditional combat elements but challenges players with fearsome bosses. In the northeastern part of the map, you will encounter a large chameleon that can defeat you with a single strike from its tongue. With some trial and error, you can figure out how to defeat this giant lizard and continue your adventures. Or, if you don’t have the time, you can learn exactly what to do from this guide.

How to Defeat the Green Chameleon

When you enter the room with the green chameleon, there will be a roof above you, protecting you from its attacks. Use this opportunity to familiarize yourself with the area, as you’ll need to reach three yellow buttons to open the gate beneath the boss. When you’re ready, drop down the hole in front of you and start the battle.

The chameleon periodically uses two attacks. The first and most dangerous is the tongue attack. It extends its tongue towards your location at the start of the attack and absorbs the first object it touches (if anything at all). If it eats you, the game is over. Luckily, there are several patches of grass on the ground. If you hide under the grass, the chameleon will grab it instead of you.

However, you don’t necessarily need to use the grass to avoid the attack. The tongue’s trajectory is determined at the moment the attack begins, so you can jump or move sideways when it extends its tongue. This is particularly useful when you need to climb onto the platform floating above you, as your constant movement will make it difficult for the chameleon to hit you.

The chameleon signals its second attack when its eyes turn red and a characteristic bubbling sound accompanies it. After a short pause, the chameleon releases four projectiles from its eyes, which follow a specific trajectory to the ground. This attack is much easier to dodge, and the chameleon does not use its tongue during this time.

To press the three buttons, you can easily reach two of them at the bottom of the screen using the Yo-Yo. You can also use a chinchilla to jump onto it and press the buttons, but this will take more time. Then use the chinchilla to jump onto the small platform beneath the chameleon and wait for an opportunity to climb onto the platform floating above you to reach the last button. It may be scary to approach the chameleon, but remember that you can use the grass as cover. Just don’t stay there when the chameleon eats all the grass.

After pressing the last button, quickly run to the gate and pass through it. You’ve survived to continue your journey.

How to Defeat the Red Chameleon

It turns out the previous encounter was just a prelude to the real boss fight in this biome. The red chameleon guards the flame you need for further progress in the game, and this time the battle will be to the end. When you land, you will see five hedgehogs spinning around the platform below you while the chameleon watches you. To the right of you is poisonous darkness that will harm you upon contact, so stay close to the center and left side of the screen.

The chameleon’s attacks remain the same as before, but this time you have no grass to hide under. Instead, use your knowledge from the previous encounter to make the chameleon eat the hedgehogs. The easiest way to do this is to press the left button in front of any of the hedgehogs, moving forward at the same speed they walk. This will make the chameleon try to eat you but grab the hedgehog instead. You need it to eat all five hedgehogs to defeat it.

This is the main task, but there is one more trick. When you get to the last hedgehog, it may be difficult to align it with the chameleon during its tongue attack. Fortunately, you can make the hedgehogs fall asleep using the flute. This will temporarily stop them until you stop playing, helping you control the course of the battle.

However, it’s important: use the flute only when the hedgehogs are on top of the platform. Otherwise, the hedgehogs will fall and die, making the battle unwinnable. If you don’t have the flute, return to the room marked by the large egg near the center of your map when you have at least eight eggs.
