Elden Ring is known for its complex combat system and treacherous territories to explore, so the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion promises to be an exceptionally challenging trial. With many hours of new adventures and battles ahead, it’s crucial to prepare thoroughly for the dangers that lie ahead. The question of what level to reach before starting Shadow of the Erdtree is a common concern for many players.
Shadow of the Erdtree matches the difficulty of the endgame zones in Elden Ring, and accessing it will require you to face a tough endgame boss. Therefore, it’s recommended to maximize your favorite weapon levels, find all Golden Seeds to upgrade your flasks, and reach an appropriate character level for the new challenges.
As with other endgame zones in Elden Ring, reaching at least level 120 is optimal, though it’s recommended to go up to 150 or even higher to be fully prepared for the new dangers that the DLC offers. Achieving level 120 allows you to raise Endurance and primary attack stats to soft caps, which sets a solid foundation for battling enemies and bosses.
Levels Matter, but They’re Not the Only Factor
While character levels will help you prepare for Shadow of the Erdtree, they are not the only aspect influencing the difficulty of the adventure. This DLC introduces its own leveling system through Scadutree Fragments, which can be combined at Sites of Grace to increase your damage dealt and reduce damage taken.
These fragments are scattered throughout the Land of Shadows and play a crucial role in reducing the difficulty of navigating this dangerous territory. However, you can completely skip this feature if you wish to maintain a higher level of challenge.
Quick Leveling Methods Before Entering the Land of Shadows
Players who have reached the end of Elden Ring and want to level up before diving into Shadow of the Erdtree can take advantage of an efficient rune farming spot: the Palace Approach Site of Grace at Mohgwyn Palace.
After teleporting to this Site of Grace, proceed forward and to the left down the slope, where you’ll find a large number of Albinaurics that can be killed. Most of them are passive to attacks, offering various options for taking them out. The best method is using an AOE spell to quickly wipe out all the enemies, then return to the Site of Grace to rest and repeat the process. This yields thousands of runes per run, making this spot one of the best for rune farming in the game.
Additionally, equipping the Golden Scarab talisman (found in the Abandoned Cave in Caelid) further increases the number of runes gained per run using this farming method. Efficiency is key.
You can level up your character to the desired level before starting Shadow of the Erdtree. While levels above 150 may be unnecessary, it’s recommended to aim between levels 120-150 to be ready for the Land of Shadows without being over-leveled.

Game Content Writer
I’m Mr.Brauwn, and I’ve been part of the Minecraft world for over 10 years. Like many others, I started playing with friends in the early versions, but soon I discovered that servers had enormous potential to create unique experiences. Servers and Projects Over time, I specialized in creating custom servers, developing private projects, events, and collaborations with content creators. Configuring plugins, designing systems, and shaping communities quickly became an essential part of my daily life. The Leap into Content Creation After so many years working on servers, I realized I could also share all that knowledge and those experiences visually. That’s how I started streaming on Twitch, showcasing my own servers and playing on them with the community. From Twitch to YouTube Later on, I understood that this content shouldn’t only remain in livestreams. I decided to launch my YouTube channel, where I share curiosities, tutorials, plugin reviews, updates, and technical aspects of Minecraft. It’s a space for other players and creators to discover the same potential I once found in this game. What Minecraft Means to Me For me, Minecraft is more than just a game. It’s a part of my daily life: recording, editing, testing mods, configuring plugins, building, and sharing with my community. After more than a decade, my goal remains the same: to create, inspire, and enjoy this infinite world alongside everyone who joins me on the adventure.
